Step by step

Find any cut file by number

Any job opened in seconds by typing a number or scanning the sheet, by somebody who does not know where the file lives.

3steps

Before you start

Any shop where more than one person opens files, or any shop with more than about fifty of them.

  • The cut files you already have, wherever they are.
1

Add a file and let it take a number

Add a cut file to the library and it is given the next number. Numbers are never reused, so a sheet printed two years ago still opens what it was printed with.

It does not matter what the file is called or which folder it came from. The number is the name from now on.

2

Put the number on the printed sheet

Place the code on the print file, in a clear space. It goes on a layer the laser never touches, so it prints and never cuts.

Leave the white border around it alone. That border is part of the code: artwork printed into it stops the code being read at all.

3

Open it by scanning, or by typing

Put the printed sheet under the camera and press Scan. The cut file opens.

If the code is torn, dirty or was never printed, type the number instead. The two routes reach the same file, which matters because a sheet that has been round a workshop is not always readable.

How to know it worked

  • Typing a number opens the right file.
  • Scanning a printed sheet opens the same file.
  • Somebody who has never seen the folder can open a job from the sheet alone.

When it goes wrong

2
The scan does not read the code.

Usually the white border has artwork printed into it, or the code is too small for your camera. Place it again and leave the border clear.

The number opens nothing.

The file was removed from the library folder. The number is not reused, so it now points at a file that is not there.
